Song Doctor
Professional advice & evaluation for your songs
From my own practical experience as a songwriter as well as my work at Bath Spa University critiquing, evaluating and offering feedback on songs for the MA Songwriting students and from the various songwriting workshops I lead, I know that often what many aspiring (and experienced) songwriters - who often work in isolation - need and appreciate most is a pair of independent, objective and experienced ears to listen to and comment on their songs. My feedback won’t be based on an academic, clinical analysis of the songs but much more on my practical experience as a professional writer who’s been earning a living from his songs for more than 35 years. The following headings are really just a rough guideline of the feedback I'll give.
Initial response / Form & Structure / Melody / Harmony / Dynamics / Lyrics / Rhythm / Meter / Singability
Presentation
Basic songwriting skills, the marriage of words and music is usually the main focus of the feedback (rather than the quality of recording & performance) so with that in mind I’m happy to listen to anything from a rough guitar/piano vocal ‘mobile phone’ worktape/demo to a full studio recording. However, these days the arrangement, production, recording and performance aspects of the way a song is presented are all part of a songwriters work and many writers use some kind of software/hardware recording equipment so if you’d like me to comment on these elements (or even particularly focus on them) then let me know
and obviously send the best demo you can manage. I'll send my comments, within 2 weeks from receipt of your song(s) and payment - usually much faster.
Send your songs as mp3 attachments or wav files (for large wav files use Yousendit or similar) or any questions to
